NFL NFC East 2005 Washington Redskins Published: 2005-08-31
2004 record: 6-10
Offense:
The new veteran wide receiver acquisitions of Santana Moss(NY Jets) and David Patten(New England Patriots) replace Laveranues Coles(Washington Redskins) and Rod Gardner(Carolina Panthers). Moss and Patten bring very similar attributes to the Redskins as both have track star speed, averaged over 18/yds per catch last season, but also share 5’10” size. Because of their playmaking speed, they should both hover around the 1,000 yard mark by making the most out of their catches this season. Doesn’t sound too bad? However, to maximize their potential, opening day starter quarterback Patrick Ramsey will quickly need to adjust to their speed and hit the receivers in stride on their routes. This won’t be an easy task for him as the game still seems to be too fast at times and questionable decision-making will likely be a weekly issue. So far in two pre-season games, Ramsey’s happy feet(not the dancing TD celebration kind) is affecting his accuracy on touch passes. Ramsey may have lingering flashbacks of former coaching flop Steve Spurrier’s “Kill the QB” schemes but to assist in Ramsey’s comfort level, Gibbs has implemented shotgun formations (old dawgs can learn new tricks) to help Ramsey’s defensive reads and probably most important to Ramsey, he’ll be that much further away from the defense when the ball is snapped. Ramsey can also expect to see lots of blitzes. Current backup quarterback Mark Brunell has his legs back after previous hamstring issues. The Redskins selected 1st round quarterback Jason Campbell(Auburn), but Campbell’s impact will probably come next year. The offense will rely heavily on the offensive line and running back Clinton Portis who has added 20 lbs of beef for a reason and should see 350+ carries both on the outside and between the tackles with 1,700 -1,800 total yards from scrimmage a realistic possibility. The brunt of the scoring will be on Portis as the receivers may be held to low-mid single digit touchdowns. The offensive line automatically improves this season with the return of veteran right tackle Jon Jansen (Achilles) who’ll rejoin an improved Chris Samuels on the other end. The line will be tested hard and will need to stay healthy as depth is an issue
Defense:
Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams’ squad last season ranked 3rd in yards/game (1st in NFC), 2nd in rush yards/game (1st in NFC) and 5th in points/game (2nd in NFC) with his aggressive, blitzing schemes. The solid unit from last year should deliver similar results in the NFC, especially against the run with the front 7 returning, including the returns of linebacker LaVar Arrington and defensive end Philip Daniels who missed most of last season to injuries. The defense will match up well against offensive opposition this season since the majority of their schedule will be against run heavy teams, although most of these teams have very good running games. The secondary took a big hit at corner with the loss of veteran Fred Smoot(Minnesota Vikings) and the Redskins addressed this hole by selecting cornerback Carlos Rogers(Auburn) in the first round. Rogers should start opposite veteran Shaun Springs by week 1 but should not be expected to fill Smoot’s shoes this season and will be tested early. If hard-
hitting sophomore free safety Sean Taylor can stay a free man, the defense is well-balanced and should produce similar results to last season. The NFC’s top defense had a single Pro Bowler, outside linebacker Marcus Washington while the Philadelphia Eagles sent four.
Overall:
It’s hard to imagine winning only 6 games with this kind of defense in a weak conference, but the offense ranked 31st in points/game and points will again be hard to come by, especially with the potential distraction of a weekly quarterback controversy. The quarterback situation may attract media attention but Gibbs’ team will play hard for him, regardless who is under center. Prediction: 3rd in NFC East.
