NFL AFC South 2005 Tennessee Titans Published: 2005-09-10
2004 record: 5-11
Offense:
The Titans offense ranked 10th in the league in pass yards (226), 14th in rush yards (116.9), and 15th in points per game (21.5). The offense lost wide receiver Derrick Mason (Baltimore Ravens) and running back Antowain Smith (New Orleans Saints), but added running back Travis Henry (Buffalo Bills) to split time behind injury prone Chris Brown, who missed 5 games last season with turf toe. In 11 starts, Brown did log 1,067 rush yards, 4.9 avg., and 6 TDs. Fullback Robert Holcombe (Kansas City Chiefs) will be replaced by sophomore Troy Fleming. Tyrone Calico, who missed most of last season (knee), will start for Mason. # 1 receiver Drew Bennett led the Titans with 1,247 yards (8th in the NFL) and 11 TDs (tied 8th). 3 rookie receivers have the backup spots; 3rd round picks Brandon Jones (Oklahoma) and Roby Courtney (Indiana), and 4th round pick Roydell Williams (Tulane). The veteran offensive line returns with a rookie starter at right tackle, 2nd round pick Michael Roos (Eastern Washington) filling in
for free agent loss Fred Miller (Chicago Bears). The extent of this hole could be a problem area in pass protection. The offensive line gave up 44 sacks last season. Quarterback Steve McNair returns after missing half of last season to injury (sternum). McNair seems to have recovered fully from his sternum bone graft surgery and looks to be in great shape after dropping some 20+ lbs. but will the Billy Volek did a solid job filling in for McNair, posting a passer rating of 87.1. New offensive coordinator Norm Chow (USC) replaces Mike Heimerdinger (New York Jets) to open up the air offense, implementing a system with more freedom for McNair to call audibles and lead the offense. The offense gains some depth at running back but loses some at receiver, but enough remains on offense for Chow to work with.
Defense:
The Titans defense ranked 18th against the run (119.8), 26th against the pass (237.9), and 30th in points allowed (27.4). Off-season salary cap house-cleaning continues on defense with the losses of defensive ends Kevin Carter (Miami Dolphins) and Carlos Hall (Kansas City Chiefs). Carter led the Titans with 6 sacks. Also lost were cornerbacks Samari Rolle (Baltimore Ravens) and Andre Dyson (Seattle Seahawks), safety Lance Schulters (Miami Dolphins), and linebacker Rocky Calmus (Indianapolis Colts). Dyson led the defense with 6 INTs and 15 pass defenses. Rolle missed 5 games (knee) and Schulters missed most of the year (foot). Free agent defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch (Arizona Cardinals) will start with sophomores, defensive end Antwan Odom and defensive tackle Randy Starks, and defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth. Outside linebacker Peter Sirmon returns, after missing last season to a torn acl, to rejoin team tackle leader Keith Bulluck and Brad Kassell. Cornerbacks Andre Woolfolk and Tony Beckham now start, but Beckham may drop to nickel, as the 6th draft pick cornerback Adam Jones (Tennessee), should eventually start after having an extensive contract holdout. The biggest drop off from last year appears to be the defensive line. The Titans young defense will start their growing pains this season.
Overall:
11 rookies make the roster with more youth beyond that everywhere. Head Coach Jeff Fisher will need some of the young players on defense to make a big impact to avoid another 5-11 season. Prediction: 4th in AFC South.
