NFL AFC East 2005 New York Jets Published: 2005-09-03
2004 record: 10-6 (Wildcard)
Playoffs:
Won AFC Wildcard at San Diego Chargers, 20-17(OT)
Lost AFC Divisional at Pittsburgh Steelers, 20-17 (OT)
Offense:
The Jets offense ranked 3rd in the NFL in rush yards(2nd in AFC), 22nd in pass yards, 17th in points. New offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger (OC Tennessee Titans) was brought in to expand playbook creativity in the pass game, but the main motor in this offense is all-pro running back Curtis Martin and the offensive line. Martin became the oldest rushing champion last season with 1,697 yards and also totaled 14 touchdowns. The backfield is still deep despite losing LaMont Jordan (Oakland Raiders) with the addition of Derrick Blaylock (Kansas City Chiefs), who will be a solid backup to Martin. The league’s top center, all-pro Kevin Mawae leads a solid offensive line, and this year his hand isn’t broken. The loss of tackle Kareem McKenzie (New York Giants) won’t help as sophomore Adrian Jones steps in on the right side. Laveranues Coles (Washington Redskins) returns at the #1 receiver slot via trade for Santana Moss. Tight end Doug Jolley (Oakland Raiders) was added for the Jets 1st round pick and
should be able to make an impact in the pass game alongside #1 tight end Chris Baker. Jolley, however, has not been impressive in camp or pre-season. Quarterback Chad Pennington had off-season rotator cuff surgery, but in the pre-season, has shown deep ball strength and accuracy and the shoulder no longer looks to be an issue. With Pennington healthy along with Heimerdinger’s help, the offense should improve their pass game this season. The Jets actually selected a kicker in the 2nd round, Mike Nugent (Ohio State) to replace Doug Brien, who was released in the off-season after missing two late field goal attempts that would have won them the playoff game at Pittsburgh.
Defense:
The Jets defense ranked 4th in the NFL in points/game, 5th against the run, and 14th against the pass. The front four are solid against the run and pass, led by defensive ends Shaun Ellis (team sack leader w/11) and all-pro John Abraham (franchised). Abraham has missed the entire off-season after just recently signing his franchise tender and his game shape is a mystery. Head Coach Herm Edwards will use Abraham whenever possible to help him regain last year’s form but this may take a few weeks. Middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma, the NFL’s 2004 Defensive Rookie of the Year, made a huge impact last season and ranked 2nd on the team in tackles, tackles for loss, and interceptions. Along with team tackle leader, outside linebacker Eric Barton, this unit is solid and fast, especially against the run. The weakest unit on defense upgraded a lot in the secondary by adding free agent cornerback Ty Law (New England Patriots), who will take over for Donnie Abraham(retired). David Barrett starts across from Law. The Jets selected 2nd round cornerback Justin Miller (Clemson). The speedy Miller may only see dime situations on defense, but will return both kicks on special teams. Free safety Erik Coleman, a 5th round pick last season, had a solid rookie season and led the team with 4 interceptions, ranked 2nd in pass defenses, and 3rd in tackles. There may be a big hole at strong safety with Oliver Celestin (only NFL experience on special teams) replacing Reggie Tongue (released). 4th round rookie safety Kerry Rhodes (Louisville) currently backs up Celestin. Bigger things are expected from Vilma and Coleman this year, but the addition of Law helps improve the defense overall from last year.
Overall:
The AFC East teams all face a much tougher schedule compared to last season, and the AFC playoff contenders are much deeper. The Jets should make the wildcard round but this will be harder to do than last season. Prediction: 2nd in AFC East.
