NFL NFC East 2005 New York Giants Published: 2005-09-10
2004 record: 6-10
Offense:
The Giants offense ranked 11th in rushing (119), 26th in passing (176.1) and 22nd in points (18.9).
Free agent wide receiver Plaxico Burress (Pittsburgh Steelers) will be the new # 1, joining Amani Toomer, who led the team with 747 but had 0 TDs. Ike Hilliard (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) was released. Tight end Jeremy Shockey (66 receptions, 666 yards, 6 TDs) led the Giants in receptions and TDs, and will now have more help with the addition of Burress. Quarterback Eli Manning will start the season for the first time, with the departure of backup Kurt Warner (Arizona Cardinals). In his rookie season, the # 1 pick Manning posted a 55.4 passer rating. The offense will improve as Manning improves. However, the cornerstone of the offense will be all-pro running back Tiki Barber, who led the league with 2,096 total yards and added 15 TDs. Free agent Tackle Kareem McKenzie (New York Jets) will start on the right side and add depth to an offensive line that gave up 52 sacks (tied 29th for most sacks taken). The Giants cut quarterback Jesse Palmer, running back Michael Cloud and offensive lineman Lewis Kelly;
waived offensive linemen Wayne Lucier, Brandon Winey, Morgan Pears and Myniya Smith, running back Ryan Grant, wide receivers Mark Jones, Ataveus Cash and Michael Jennings, tight end Darius Williams.
Defense:
The Giants defense ranked 8th against the pass (189.4), 28th against the run (134.8), and 17th in points allowed (21.7). Defensive end Michael Strahan returns after missing the last half of the season on IR (pectoral) and this instantly improves the line. Strahan rejoins defensive end Osi Umenyiora, who led the team with 7 sacks, 7 tackles for loss, and 3 forced fumbles. Free agent defensive tackle Kendrick Clancy (Pittsburgh Steelers) will now start with William Joseph inside an attempt to improve the weak run defense. The Giants tied 8th in the league with 18 forced fumbles and tied 9th with 40 sacks. Free agent middle linebacker Antonio Pierce (Washington Redskins) will now start with team tackle leader Carlos Emmons and sophomore Reggie Torbor. 2nd round draft pick, cornerback Corey Webster (LSU) backs up Will Allen. Will Peterson returns on the other corner. Safeties Gibril Wilson and Brent Alexander led the secondary with 3 INTs each. Kick returner Willie Ponder led the league with a 26.9
return yards avg. The Giants cut linebackers Kevin Lewis, James Maxwell, and T.J. Hollowell, defensive linemen Jonas Seawright and Raheem Orr, and safety Curry Burns.
Overall:
Head coach Tom Coughlin’s team should improve on a 6-10 season but this may not be enough to get out of the cellar. Prediction: 4th in NFC East.
