NFL NFC South 2005 New Orleans Saints Published: 2005-09-10
2004 record: 8-8
Offense:
The Saints offense ranked 12th in passing (224.2), 27th in rushing (100.4), and 14th in points (21.8). Mike Sheppard was promoted from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator. Quarterback Aaron Brooks threw for 3,810 yards, 21 TDs, 16 INTs with a passer rating of 79.5
Running back Deuce McAllister will be the focal point of the offense. Deuce logged 1,300+ total yards and 9 TDs, despite a hampered ankle. Sheppard will implement an approach to simplify the air playbook and rely more on McAllister. If he can stay on the field, Deuce could hit the 350 carries club. The Saints signed right guard Jermane Mayberry (Philadelphia Eagles) and selected with the 13th pick, right tackle Jammal Brown (Oklahoma), both of whom will be counted on to open holes for McAllister and improve a line which gave up 41 sacks last season. Tight end Boo Williams was placed on IR with a torn acl and Ernie Conwell will start in Boo’s place. All-pro wide receiver Joe Horn racked up 94 receptions (1st in NFC), 1,399 yards (2nd in NFL), and 11 TDs. Horn along with Donte' Stallworth, form a solid tandem, and should post solid numbers since the Saints will likely be in passing situations often. The line and running game are expected to improve this year.
Defense:
The Saints defense ranked last in yards (383.8) and tied 27th in points allowed (25.3). The
line is the strong point of the defense. Right end Charles Grant racked up 80 tackles (3rd on team), 11.5 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 1 INT, and 7 pass defenses. Left end Darren Howard led the team with 11 sacks and caused 4 forced fumbles. Will Smith led the team with 6 forced fumbles and logged 7.5 sacks. The defensive ends are playmakers and deep. The Saints led the NFL with 20 fumble recoveries. Defensive tackle Willie Whitehead will start after missing the first half of last season (knee) along with Brian Young. The linebackers are weak and should continue to get worked this year. Based on their depth at the line but lack of it at linebacker, the Saints should consider some 5-2 schemes. Cornerback Mike McKenzie (led the team with 5 INTs) and starts with Fakhir Brown (2 INTs, 2 forced fumbles). The Saints signed free safety Dwight Smith (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) to fill the hole left by Tebucky Jones (Miami Dolphins). The Saints added 2nd round pick free safety Josh Bullocks
(Nebraska) to currently back up Smith. The secondary has issues with man coverage. Overall, not much has changed.
Overall:
The Superdome will be coming down and the Saints home games will likely be played at the Alamodome in San Antonio and LSU’s Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge. Hurricane Katrina and her aftermath should alone be enough to drop the Saints behind Tampa Bay this season. Prediction: 4th in NFC South.
