NFL AFC East 2005 Miami Dolphins Published: 2005-09-10
2004 record: 4-12
Offense:
The Dolphins offense ranked 28th in points and 29th in yards but will have two new starters at running back and quarterback. The 2nd draft pick, running back Ronnie Brown (Auburn) will start and be the offensive focus for new head coach Nick Saban (LSU). Running back Ricky Williams returns to the team after a year of world travel, etc. but will face a 4 game suspension for a substance abuse violation (weed). Williams returns 15 lbs. lighter and looks quick. Williams isn’t a true north-south runner inside and the weight loss should help his effectiveness outside, where he would prefer to run in space. Williams should expect to see time as Saban would like to audition Williams as much as possible. Running backs Travis Minor and Sammy Morris back up Brown until Williams returns. The young offensive line returns after giving up 52 sacks (tied 29th) last season. Free agent quarterback Gus Frerotte (Minnesota Vikings) now starts for A.J. Feeley, who has been demoted to 3rd string behind Sage Rosenfels. The Dolphins ranked worst in the league with 26 interceptions and 16 fumbles lost. Wide receiver Chris Chambers (69 catches, 898 yards, 7 TDs) and tight end Randy McMichael (73 catches, 791 yards, 4 TDs) lead the receivers. Wideout David Boston returns after missing the 2004 season (knee) and will be # 3 behind starter Marty Booker. The offense has definitely improved at running back and the return of Boston should also help, but that’s about it.
Defense:
The defense ranked 8th overall in yards, 2nd in pass yards(162), 31st in rush yards (143.9) and 20th in points allowed (22.1). The defensive line will see three new starters joining all-pro defensive end Jason Taylor. Defensive end Kevin Carter (Tennesee Titans) will now start opposite Taylor, backed up by 2nd round pick Matt Roth (Iowa). Defensive tackles Keith Traylor (New England Patriots) and Vonnie Holliday (Kansas City Chiefs) start inside. The new veteran line will be an upgrade and should improve against the run over last year’s soft play. Veteran linebackers Zach Thomas and Junior Seau will be joined by rookie 3rd round pick, outside linebacker Channing Crowder (Florida) who steps in for departed Morlon Greenwood (Houston Texans). Cornerback Patrick Surtain and strong safety Sammy Knight were both lost to the Kansas City Chiefs. Cornerback Reggie Howard steps in and safety Tebucky Jones (New Orleans Saints) was signed to fill in for Knight. Surtain and Knight combined for 8 of the team’s 15
interceptions. The Dolphins have a big drop off at corner with Surtain’s departure. New free agent safety Lance Schulters (Tennessee Titans) replaces Arturo Freeman as they switch teams.
Overall:
Nick Saban will help this team over time but a tough division/schedule this season keeps the Dolphins in the cellar. Prediction: 4th in AFC East.
