NFL AFC South 2005 Indianapolis Colts Published: 2005-09-06
2004 record: 12-4 (won AFC South)
Playoffs:
Won AFC Wildcard vs. Denver Broncos, 49-24
Lost AFC Divisional at New England Patriots, 20-3
Offense:
The NFL’s 2-time MVP, Peyton Manning had the NFL’s greatest regular season for a quarterback, highlighted by breaking big-time NFL records for touchdowns (49) and passer rating (121.1) previously held by Dan Marino (48, 1984) and Steve Young (112.8, 1994). Both were inducted to the hall this summer. Wide receivers, all-pro Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, and Brandon Stokley all eclipsed 1,000+ yards and double-digit touchdowns.
Solid tight end Dallas Clark will no longer be joined with Marcus Pollard (Detroit Lions), who was lost in free agency, but that just means more touchdowns for everyone else. All-pro running back Edgerrin James (franchised) accumulated 2,031 total yards (2nd in the NFL, 1st in AFC) with 9 rushing touchdowns. This from a back who plays in a passing offense. Nice. James may be in his final season with the Colts and will look to impress. The offensive line is solid in run and pass protections, giving up a league best (tied) 14 sacks. The Colts’ offense is loaded everywhere and remains the NFL’s best. Sick statistics, similar results.
Defense:
The Colts defense ranked 19th in points allowed, 24th against the run, and 28th against the pass. However, the defense led the league in fumbles, tied 3rd in sacks, tied 2nd in AFC for takeaways,. The defensive line, led by the NFL’s sack leader (16), all-pro defensive end Dwight Freeney, has been upgraded with the addition of free agent defensive tackle Corey Simon (Philadelphia Eagles). Simon should step in for Larry Triplett. The defensive line is solid and deep. The fast, small linebacker unit was soft last year and nothing has changed. The Colts drafted cornerbacks in the first two rounds with 1st rounder Marlin Jackson (Michigan) and 2nd rounder Kelvin Hayden (Illinois). Jackson will see time in nickel or dime situations. Strong safety Mike Doss is suspended for the first two games for a league personal conduct violation. Sophomore free safety Bob Sanders returns after missing most of last season to injury (knee/foot) and should be a big improvement over Idrees Bashir (Carolina Panthers), but
other than this, nothing in the secondary has changed. The defense had the luxury of early leads and predictable scenarios, thanks to the offense, and they will again benefit from this, along with a light schedule and a weak division. Defenses ultimately get exposed in the playoffs, but they should be able to skate ‘til then.
Overall:
The Colts have an excellent shot for home field advantage but the AFC contenders will be tougher this year with some new blood. Offense gets the glory, but defense wins championships, and again the Colts just don’t have enough here. The defensive unit will be the worst to appear in the AFC playoffs. Prediction: 1st in AFC South.
