NFL AFC South 2005 Houston Texans Published: 2005-09-10
2004 record: 7-9
Offense:
The Texans offense ranked 12th in rush yards (117.6), 18th in pass yards (202.9), and 21st in points (19.3).
Running back Dominick Davis racked up 1,776 total yards, 14 touchdowns, and led the AFC running backs with 68 receptions. Davis carries a lot of weight for the Texans offense. All-pro receiver Andre Johnson (79 receptions, 1142 yards, 6 TDs) leads the air game along with # 2 Jabar Gaffney. Quarterback David Carr posted 3,531 yards, 16 TDs, and a 83.5 passer rating, but was sacked 49 times (2nd most in AFC). Free agent left tackle Victor Riley (New Orleans Saints) now starts for Seth Wand, but otherwise the line returns the same. Giving up lots of sacks still remains an issue for the offense.
Defense:
The Texans defense ranked 13th against the run (115.2), 24th against the pass (225.9), and tied 15th in points (21.2). Selected 16th draft pick, defensive end Travis Johnson (Florida State), who will backup Gary Walker in the 3-4 scheme. Nose tackle Seth Payne and end Robaire Smith also return. Linebackers Kailee Wong (led team - 5.5 sacks, 3 INTs, 14 pass defenses) and Jason Babin return, but the Texans lost linebackers Jamie Sharper (Seattle Seahawks) and Jay Foreman (Oakland Raiders), last year’s top 2 tacklers at linebacker. Free agent inside linebacker Morlon Greenwood (Miami Dolphins) and Antwan Peek step in to fill these spots, but this may be a drop off. Cornerback Dunta Robinson had a solid rookie season and led the team with 3 forced fumbles, 6 INTs and 19 pass defenses. Cornerback Aaron Glenn (Dallas Cowboys) rejoins Parcells so free agent Philip Buchanon (Oakland Raiders) now starts opposite Robinson. Buchanon has speed but plays undisciplined and is not strong in run support. 6th round
rookie C.C. Brown (Louisiana-Lafayette), will start at strong safety along with
Marcus Robinson. The Texans defense logged 22 INTs (3rd in AFC) last season. The defense has added youth to the starting roster and they will need to step up to improve upon an average defense.
Overall:
Head Coach Dom Capers’ young team should show improvements from last season, but the division will be competitive. Prediction: 3rd in AFC South.
