2005 Green Bay Packers

2004 record: 10-6 (Wildcard)

Playoffs:
Lost NFC Wildcard vs. Minnesota Vikings, 31-17

Offense:

The Packers offense ranked 1st in the NFC in yards, points, and sacks allowed. Quarterback Brett Favre returns in better shape than the previous couple of years and seems more rejuvenated heading into the season. Favre threw for 4,088 yards (5th in NFL, 2nd in NFC), 30 touchdowns (4th in NFL), and was sacked a league low 12 times. All of Favre’s receiving weapons return, led by all-pro Javon Walker. Walker logged 1,382 yards (3rd in NFL) and 12 touchdowns (tied 6th in NFL). # 2 wide receiver Donald Driver caught 1,208 yards (10th in NFL) and 9 touchdowns. Tight end Bubba Franks, who signed a new 7-year deal in the off-season, caught 7 touchdowns (tied 2nd in the NFL for tight ends) and should continue to be an end zone target. The solid backfield returns with all-pro fullback William Henderson and all-pro running back Ahman Green (1,163 rush yards, 4.5 avg., 7 touchdowns). The changes occurred on the offensive line, as the Packers lost their two best lineman to free agency, all-pro Marco Rivera (Dallas Cowboys) and Mike Wahle (Carolina Panthers). This hurts and the guard situation drops off regardless of who now starts. Adrian Klemm may switch from tackle to fill one of the guard spots but Klemm has been on IR the last two seasons. The losses at guard will hurt Green the most. However, center Mike Flanagan returns after missing most of last season to injury (knee). Overall, the offensive line returns weaker. The Packers used their 1st round pick on quarterback Aaron Rodgers (California), but Rodgers will have no impact until Favre retires. The offense remains well-balanced and strong and should deliver similar statistics to last year, especially in the air.

Defense:

The Packers defense ranked 23rd in points, 25th in yards, 31st in interceptions, and tied last in takeaways. Defensive tackle Grady Jackson missed 6 games last season to injury (knee) but should anchor the line if he can stay healthy. The defensive ends are solid with Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, who racked up 13.5 sacks (3rd in NFL), and Aaron Kampman. Linebacker Nick Barnett is a solid tackler and plays the pass well but had no forced fumbles. The rest of the unit have issues with pass coverage and nobody makes the big plays. Free safety Darren Sharper was lost in free agency and now starts for Minnesota. Sharper had 4 interceptions (rest of team also had 4) with 2 touchdowns. 2nd round rookie safety Nick Collins (Bethune-Cookman) may fill in for Sharper. As it was, the secondary got torched and things may have gotten worse as pass coverage and lack of playmaking remain big problems on defense. New defensive coordinator Jim Bates (Miami Dolphins) replaces Bob Slowik and this alone should help some, but as the Kansas City Chiefs realized last season, the addition of a new coordinator, and no one else, changed nothing.

Overall:

The Packers face a tougher schedule than last season and two of the division rivals have improved this season, especially the Vikings. Prediction: 2nd in NFC North.
