NFL NFC North 2005 Detroit Lions Published: 2005-09-10
2004 record: 6-10
Offense:
The Lions offense ranked 24th in NFL in yards and points. Running back Kevin Jones added 1,300+ total yards, 4.7 run avg., and 6 touchdowns last season. The running game was effective when utilized. Wide receiver Roy Williams led the Lions with 54 receptions, 817 yards, and 8 TDs. Charles Rogers returns as the # 2 wideout after missing the 2004 season (collarbone). The Lions selected receiver Mike Williams (USC) with the 10th draft pick. Williams is a large receiver and along with free agent wide receiver Kevin Johnson (Baltimore Ravens), the wide receiver unit looks to be very deep. Marcus Pollard (Indianapolis Colts) comes in to replace Stephen Alexander (Denver Broncos) at tight end. Quarterback Joey Harrington looks to be entering his make or break season as a Lion starter. Weapons everywhere on offense, so Harrington has everything he needs to step up? Maybe, maybe not. A big question mark is on the offensive line. The Lions brought in free agent left guard Rick DeMulling (Indianapolis Colts) but lost right tackle Stockar McDougle (Miami Dolphins). Tackle Kelly Butler, who’s essentially a rookie, steps in for McDougle. Harrington won’t have to look over his shoulder for backup Jeff Garcia, who’s out for 8 weeks with a broken leg, but may have to against the pass rush. With enough time in the pocket, Harrington should head towards the direction of expectations in Detroit.
Defense:
The Lions defense ranked 22nd in NFL in yards and 18th in points. The front four return from last season including all-pro defensive tackle Shaun Rogers (3 blocks) and defensive end James Hall (team sack leader, 11.5). The Lions selected 2nd round pick defensive end Shaun Cody (USC), who adds depth to the solid line as a current backup. Strong side linebacker Boss Bailey returns after missing the 2004 season (knee), and will start along with middle linebacker Earl Holmes (led team in tackles, 111) and Davis James, to help improve the run defense. The secondary adds free agent safety Kenoy Kennedy (Denver Broncos), who replaces Bracey Walker as the starter. Safety Terence Holt now replaces Brock Marion who was released. All-pro cornerback Dre’ Bly (led team with 4 INTs) and Fernando Bryant return after missing a combined 9 games. The defense, if healthy, should look to be improved from last season. All-pro kick returner Eddie Drummond had 4 touchdowns and with kicker Jason Hanson, head a solid special teams unit.
Overall:
The Lions could be a sleeper pick against Green Bay this season. The 2nd place race in the North should be close.
Prediction: 3nd in NFC North.
