NFL AFC North 2005 Cincinnati Bengals Published: 2005-09-10
2004 record: 8-8
Offense:
The Bengals offense ranked 17th in the NFL in rush yards (114.9), 17th in pass yards (206.3), and 10th in points (23.4). Running back Rudi Johnson ranked 6th in NFL in rushing yards with 1,454 (4.0 avg.) and 12 TDs. The offensive line returns from last year, led by all-pro tackle Willie Anderson. The Bengals also have one of the top receiving tandems in the league with all-pro Chad Johnson (1,274 yards, 9 TDs) and T.J. Houshmanzadeh (978 yards, 4 TDs). Carson Palmer (77.3 passer rating last season) is set for a breakout year. Palmer has all the tools he’ll need on a well-balanced offense and should improve his statistics across the board. Palmer’s rating should easily improve to the 80s and maybe flirt with 90s. The offense will be put to the test this season as they will face some of the league’s top defenses throughout.
Defense:
The Bengals defense ranked 13th against the pass (206.4), 26th against the rush (128.9), and 21st in points allowed (23.3). Defensive end Duane Clemons is suspended for the first 4 games due to a substance abuse violation and will be replaced by sophomore Robert Geathers. Free agent addition defensive tackle Bryan Robinson (Miami Dolphins) will start with John Thornton and defensive end Justin Smith (led team with 8 sacks). After an extensive holdout, the 17th draft pick, defensive end David Pollack (Georgia) will step in at strong side linebacker next to former Bulldog teammate and 2nd round pick, middle linebacker Odell Thurman (Georgia). Brian Simmons (led team in tackles) returns on the weak side. The rookie linebackers should be an improvement over last season’s weak run defense. Last year starter Kevin Hardy was released. The Bengals strongest defensive unit, the secondary, returns minus Kim Herring (IR). All-pro cornerback Tory James led the team with 8 interceptions (2nd in NFL). Cornerback
Delta O’Neal added 4 INTs. Safety Madieu Williams had a solid rookie year, ranking 2nd on the team in tackles, adding 3 INTs, with 1 for a TD. The Bengals defense tied for 3rd in NFL in takeaways (36). The secondary will continue to improve with the development of Williams and sophomore corner Keiwan Ratliff. The loss of Clemons hurts but the rookie linebackers add playmaking ability lacking last season.
Overall:
Overall:
The Bengals have a tough schedule and a 9-7 record this season will be hard to get. Prediction: 3rd in AFC North.
