NFL NFC North 2005 Chicago Bears Published: 2005-09-10
2004 record: 5-11
Offense:
The Bears offense ranked last in the NFL in yards and points. Quarterback Rex Grossman started 3 games in 2004 before a torn acl ended his season. 4 quarterbacks combined for a pass rating avg. of 61.7, 9 passing TDs, and 16 INTs. Two of those, Craig Krenzel and Jonathan Quinn are gone. 4th round rookie Kyle Orton (Purdue) and Chad Hutchinson backup Grossman. Running back Thomas Jones led the offense with 948 rushing yards, 7 TDs, and 56 receptions and will look to start due to the unusually long holdout of the 4th draft pick, running back Cedric Benson (Texas). The Bears got a big upgrade at wide receiver with the addition of Mushin Muhammad (Carolina Panthers), who led the league with 1,405 yards and 16 TDs. Muhammad replaces last season’s team leader in receiving yards, David Terrell (New England Patriots). Inexperienced Justin Gage will start opposite of Muhammad. The receiver unit behind Muhammad is young. New free agents right tackle Fred Miller (Tennessee Titans) and left tackle John Tait
(Kansas City Chiefs) should help upgrade an offensive line that gave up a league high 66 sacks. The Bears have serious issues at quarterback and the offensive line is still a question mark. However, things cannot get any worse than last season.
Defense:
The Bears defense ranked 15th against the pass (208.8), 25th against the run (128.1), and 13th in points allowed (20.7).
The defensive line returns intact, led by defensive ends Alex Brown (led team with 6 sacks) and Adelwale Ogunleye.
Middle linebacker Brian Urlacher returns after missing 7 games last season to injury (hamstring). Urlacher will rejoin weak side linebacker Lance Briggs (led team with 126 tackles and 10 pass defenses) and Hunter Hillenmeyer. A healthy Urlacher will add a big boost to the run defense. The secondary returns with cornerbacks Charles Tillman and Jerry Azumah (4 INTs last season). Tillman missed half the season to injury (knee). Sophomore corner Nathan Vasher (led the team with 5 INTs) will back up Azumah. Free agent cornerback R.W. McQuarters (Detroit Lions) is gone. Strong safety Mike Brown returns after missing most of last season to a ruptured Achilles and will start with 6th round rookie Chris Harris (Louisiana-Monroe). Mike Green (2nd on team with 107 tackles) will backup the rookie. Head Coach Lovie Smith, in his first year, implemented an aggressive style defense that scored 6 TDs (1st in NFC), led the NFL in third-down efficiency, and ranked 4th in red-zone defense. A healthier Bears defense
looks to return improved at linebacker and secondary, and their stats should reflect this.
Overall:
The Bears have too many issues on offense to change much from last season. Prediction: 4th in NFC North.
